VivaAerobus to Launch Guanajuato-San Antonio Service

VivaAerobus is expanding its presence at San Antonio International Airport, launching service to Mexico’s Guanajuato state to help stimulate further leisure traffic from Southern Texas. Starting May 1, the Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier will add a new direct flight from San Antonio to Bajío International Airport, serving the Greater Bajío region, including the major cities of León and Guanajuato.

“(VivaAerobus’) nonstop flights from San Antonio to Leon are part of our growth strategy and our commitment to offering new destinations to our passengers, providing added convenience for passengers traveling for business, leisure or visiting friends and relatives,” Juan Carlos Zuazua, VivaAerobus’ Chief Executive Officer, said in a press statement. “We bring closer and safer than ever these two cities with an affordable, reliable and flexible service.”

The new service is San Antonio International Airport’s fifth direct service to Mexico. Mexico City is served by Aeromexico, Volaris and VivaAerobus, while Monterrey and Guadalajara are served by VivaAerobus and Volaris respectively. Sun Country and Southwest offer seasonal flights to Cancun.

VivaAerobus first began launched service to San Antonio from its Monterrey hub in 2011. In September 2020, following the opening of gate slots at Mexico City International Airport, VivaAerobus expanded its domestic and international network from the Mexican capital, also launching service to Los Angeles, San Antonio and Dallas. Guanajuato is VivaAerobus’ third and newest destination from San Antonio.

VivaAerobus will fly the Guanajuato route twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays using a 186-seat Airbus A320neo jet. VivaAerobus also continues to operate multiple daily flights to its hub in Monterrey, allowing travelers to connect to other destinations in its Mexico network.

“We are very pleased with the continued investment that VivaAerobus has committed to San Antonio,” said Jesus Saenz, the City of San Antonio’s Director of Airports. “This new service is a terrific indicator of growing demand between South-Central Texas and Mexico and will be a tremendous asset for the entire region.”
